History done with the aim of going where the evidence leads is very much an antidote to the narratives connived by the crude, the propagandist & narrative driven aspects of the Enlightenment.

That is, some of the tools of the 18th Century have a powerful capacity to unveil evidence and logical pattern if followed comprehensively and fully. By and large, the dominant narratives were not like this. Yet, the tools can still be properly applied. Ironically, those very tools can dismantle the myths concocted by the insincere.

I wrote this some days ago:

"One painstaking chip at a time Enlightenment misjudgment, misunderstanding and misinformation is being excreted from the cataract that has been covering our eyes."

I wrote this about the supremely excellent work of Professor Peter Harrison, now at the University of Queensland. He is at the cutting edge of showing the false historical contours of the Enlightenment.

His latest book, Some New World: Myths of Supernatural Belief in a Secular Age, is a crowning upon an array of fine works achieving this point.
