Hail and Welcome!
Two abiding memories and experiences will abide in my memory from today.
1) Rain. Followed by more rain. And topped off with more rain!
2)The Crags. Followed by more crags and topped off with more crags!
Now, let it be known that I have no objection to either!
(Except I should state that I am more a Fenland walker (used to the flatter rolling countryside) than hills and crags)
Yet both driving rain and wild crags together? That was a tough day. I am really glad that Toby is with me. Younger and walking and climbing these hills with vigour and like a trailblazer for the old Dad falling behind: especially on the elevations.
We arrived at our campsite “cream crackered” and soaked. With more rain as we set up tents.
This is part and parcel of the walk as we traverse from the County of Cumbria into the County of Northumbria. Alongside Gnats and Mosquitos.
It made us appreciate those Roman Legionaries all the more. They built this wall which accompanied us much today, on the seeming precipices of crags. All year round.
We in our age salute them!
Honourable mention goes to The Samson Inn in Gilsland. A pint or two of a local malty Stout and a lunch was a welcome precursor to the trials that awaited us
So this morning after hot showers and an English breakfast wrapped in a bun and hot steaming tea….onwards and upwards!
Blessings for you all!
